Tower of Homage

TOWER OF HOMAGE

In the centre of the medieval village arises the “Torre da Menagem”, one of the best preserved in the country. With about 27 meters high, it has a quadrangular floor, crowned with battlements in pyramidal form.

Typical of the portuguese military architecture from the late thirteenth and early fourteenth century, it forms the primitive remnants of the Alcazaba, together with the building trecento of ”Os Paços do Concelho”. On the second floor there is a beautiful octagonal room with columns with decorated capitals with anthropomorphic forms. On the terrace you will find the called ”Três Coroas” which represent, according to some authors, the three kingdoms in which its construction took place. On the main façade on the outside and looking to the south, are represented the arms of D. Alfonso III (r. 1245-1279) with two angels that flank them.Currently occupied by the ”Pousada da Rainha Santa Isabel”, the old ”Paço Real” medieval was converted into warehouse during the reign of D. João V (r. 1707-1750). In 1736, the work was entrusted to Carlos Andreis. It is one of the best examples of Baroque Johannine in Estremoz with pentagonal plant and flanked by cylindrical towers. Include its trapezoidal courtyard with a central fountain adorned with marble dolphin faucets, the stairs to the Hall of Arms, with two types of tile panels, one blue and white with baroque stripes and nature arabesques inspired in the eastern tapestry, and other with stones with floral ”Johannine” decoration of mid-eighteenth century, and the Hall of Arms, where there are still some doors carved gilt and polychrome with the royal shields.
