CHURCH OF SAN FRANCISCO

CHURCH OF SAN FRANCISCO

Already existed in the 1270s, and it´s known that in 1272 it´s custody belonged to Lisbon, but after the creation of Évora in 1330, it gained the control over the Church.

There is also an interesting document of 1277 referring to a dispute between them and the friars of the Order of Avis during the construction of convent. There is still a fourteenth-century chronicle indicating its existence in Estremoz in the 1230s, but it is not contrasted with other sources. The interior has a rectangular plant, three ships and five sections. The Gothic verticality test its medieval foundation, as the decorative elements of this era are naturalistic, zoomorphic or anthropomorphic. From the baroque period is the ”Árvore of Jesse”, from the reign of D. João IV (r. 1640-1656). It was paid for by the Brotherhood of ”Nossa Senhora do Rosario” in 1652. This strange gold carved altarpiece corresponds to one of the three beautiful specimens that still exist in Portugal. In this church are buried some of the illustrious figures of Portuguese history, such as D. Fradique of Portugal, Vasco Pereira, brother of D. Nuno Alvares Pereira, who died in the betrayal of the castle of Vila Viçosa,or the judge ”António Henriques da Silveira of Paço”. According to a chronicle of Fernão Lopes, King D. Peter I (r. 1357-1367) also died in Estremoz.
