CASTEL OF EVORAMONTE (CASTELO DE EVORAMONTE)

CASTEL OF EVORAMONTE (CASTELO DE EVORAMONTE)

Perched on the highest point of a hill 481 meters above sea level on the western end of the ”Serra d´Ossa”, Évoramonte´s Castle dominates the vast alentejan plain that surrounds.

Built by D. Jaime I, Duke of Bragança, in 1531, this unique work of Portuguese military architecture of transition presents stylistic features that integrate in the end Gothic (Manueline) and others that denote already a formal language renaissance.Probably designed by Francisco and Diogo de Arruda, the Castle of Evoramonte is referent of a demonstration of power and wealth of the House of Bragança, which can be verified by the symbolism that is presented in Brigantine heraldry involving monuments and purposely breaking the flatness of the plains, becoming an authentic piece of scenery.
